Omeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor) works to block the production of acid in the stomach and it does this by shutting down a system in the stomach known as the proton pump (a molecule in certain cells of the stomach). Proton pump inhibitors reduce the amount of acid in the stomach and intestine. These drugs are often used to treat people who suffer from diseases like PUD (Peptic Ulcer Disease) and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).
The reduction of acid prevents ulcers and allows any ulcers that exist in the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum (first part that connects stomach to the small intestine) to heal. |
